It is January, 1540, and the wedding night of Henry VIII to his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. Henry is not pleased with his new wife, whose physical appearance does not match up to the promises made of her. He refuses to consummate the marriage and demands of his counsellors that they find a way to nullify it. The Catholic Duke of Norfolk, Thomas Howard, sees in this an opportunity to gain influence over the king and win back some of the ground lost by Catholicism to the new Protestant church.
