What does it take to put on a production?

It takes a lot of people to put a production on. In addition to the performers you need:

  • Director(s) - The person with the artistic vision. Will interpret the script and direct the performers to match this vision
  • Stage Management - Those in charge on the night. Ensures everything runs smoothly, all cast and props are in position and stage is correctly set up
  • Costumes - Someone who helps the director and cast find or make costumes appropriate for the production
  • Hair / Make up - The cast will often do their own hair and makeup, but in some circumstances (e.g. period hairstyles) someone may be required
  • Props - Someone who will help the director create or source the props required for the production
  • Backstage Crew - Helps the stage manager with the running of the behind the scenes
  • Lighting Design & Operation - Designs the layout of the lighting and then operates them during the performance
  • Sound Design & Operation - Sources or creates sound effects and play them on the night during the performance
  • Prompts - Ready behind the scenes with script in hand, ready to prompt any cast member who forgets a line
  • Set Builders - Designing, building, painting, wall papering of the set
  • Marketing - Designing of marketing materials (posters, etc), Photography or rehearsals, creation of promo videos and posting on social media. Anything that can help raise awareness and sell tickets.
  • Front of House - Welcoming guests, selling tickets, making drinks

If you are interesting in taking on any of these roles, or would like to know more about them, come to a rehearsal to discuss with our members, or email us at info@stjohnsplayers.co.uk

Want to direct?

What we need to know:

  • What experience do you have directing?
  • Do you have a play in mind? If not what sort of play would you like to direct?

We will review the play if you supply one, or suggest some if not

We can offer an experienced director to help co-direct if you are new, or would like additional support

The committee will support you at every step along the way
